Demystifying “Niche”, 1000 True Fans & Selling In The Passion Economy

This weekend, I've been enjoying this article: “1000 True Fans? Try 100.” By Li Jin.

I am a practitioner of the 1000 True Fans theory & have built my business on the concept:

“Rather than chasing virality, creators only need to engage a base of “true fans” - those who will “buy anything you produce” - to the tune of $100 per fan, per year (for a total annual income of $100,000).”

This appeals for 2 reasons:

  1. It makes things tangible. I only need to focus on 100 people. My people. My community. My clients. 

  2. I don’t have to worry about going viral & always being on. I focus on depth over width. I build a network - one person at a time - by deeply resonating on similar interests, values & ways of life. 

Combine this approach with the Passion Economy & I really think there is no limit to our success.

The Passion Economy is built around “creators with a purpose” - people who are powerfully motivated to build a brand, business & community, around a shared passion.

Baby boomers got access to affordable housing. We get access to affordable global small businesses.

To me, niching isn't about your Instagram bio or an elevator pitch - it really means being Distinct. 

Clients must be able to immediately see:

  1. The results you provide

  2. How fast you can provide them

  3. Where they can sign up to start

Think about it like you’re standing outside the gates of a music festival. 

You can clearly see its fun (results), how fast you can have fun (by walking in) & where you can sign up (buy a ticket). 

That’s what it’s like to be Distinct.

And I think we should pursue this ruthlessly to have tight AF messaging, systems & customer journeys. 

I got a lot of love from my recent article: 

Idea: Put your name in the middle of your journal & brainstorm all the topics that you love to talk about, share, teach & coach on. This is the basis of your eco-system. 

My ecosystem is: 

  • Clarity

  • Self-trust

  • Brave action

  • Conscious business

  • Well-eath

  • Authenticity

  • Healing

  • Life by design

  • Global mindset

  • 1000 True Fans

  • Slow-preneurship 

We have to remember: WE ARE the Passion Economy. Be the change you want to see. Share your ideas. Crush it with a feather-weight, highly profitable, global business …

And we are just getting started.
